Time to make things better for for working parents

November 16, 2020

The saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child”; organisations are a crucial component of that village - now, more than ever, is the time to recognise that and take action!

Parenthood has always been a complex journey that families have had to navigate through; being a working parent further intensifies this. COVID-19 has pushed working parenthood to the realm of a crisis for many.

In this HBR article, Daisy Dowling talks about how individuals, leaders and organisations can work together to re-engineer the parameters of working parenthood for the long haul.

The key takeaways are:

At an individual level, working parents need to: regain their confidence and control their situation; set distinct boundaries between work and family; and clarify their family and work priorities instead of being overcome by guilt.

It is also important for working parents to be courageous about bringing up family issues in career-related conversations and seek the perspective of working parents at different stages of their journey.

Finally, organisations need to be more transparent about the benefits and support that working parents are entitled to and to also foster the creation of working parent networks where employees can connect to help each other.
